MessageSujet: La Troisième Mère / La Terza Madre / Mother of Tears (Dario Argento - 2007)   La Troisième Mère / La Terza Madre / Mother of Tears (Dario Argento - 2007) EmptyLun 23 Oct 2006 - 12:36

EXCL: Dario Argento Interview
Source: Ryan RottenAugust 31, 2007

Over twenty-five years have passed since the second chapter in Italian auteur Dario Argento's Three Mothers trilogy unraveled. 1977's unpleasant and abstract trip through the world of witchcraft in Suspiria paved the way for the equally colorful, gleefully violent Inferno in 1980 - both of which introduced audiences to the Mother of Whispers and the Mother of Darkness, respectively. This October, Mother of Tears, Argento's long-awaited finale debuts at the Toronto International Film Festival and in Italy the following month.

Even with the noticeable onset of a cold, Argento was kind enough to grant ShockTillYouDrop.com some time to sit down and talk about "Tears" at the Rue Morgue Festival of Fear. A gaunt but animated creature, he wears slacks, a dark zip-up sweater and collared shirt. During our all-too-brief conversation, his English delves into mere sounds and hand gestures to evoke a feeling - making us wish we brushed up on our Italian for a deeper rapport. At times he pauses to take in the odd sites around us - kids dressed in anime costumes or "walking advertisements" - hired hands with televisions strapped to their shoulders playing commercials for "The Family Guy." We wonder what this must all look like through his dark, questioning eyes...this level of fan-like dedication. But then again, it was two writers and their reverence for Argento's works that helped bring Mother of Tears to fruition.

Speaking first of the inciting factors that got "Tears" to roll, Argento says it was neither the "right time" nor the demand from his fans that spurred inspiration. "The idea arose from the story I had first. Then I met the right people like writers Adam [Giersasch] and Jace [Anderson]." Gierasch and Anderson, each hardcore giallo fans in their own right, previously penned Tobe Hooper's The Toolbox Murders. "Working with them was a very natural process. The director needs something like an intuition and they had an infectious enthusiasm. This is the reason I chose them, because I understood in their eyes that they want to do something with the film and my story. I was just happy. We met in Los Angeles during the editing on [the "Masters of Horror" episode] 'Jenifer', then they both came to Rome, we worked together and wrote the screenplay."

Modern day Rome falls victim to the film's eponymous witch (Mater Lachrymarum) when she is unwittingly released by an art student. Argento called upon a number of familiar faces from his previous efforts to co-star including Coralina Cataldi-Tassoni, Daria Nicolodi and Udo Kier. In the leading role? His daughter Asia who has appeared in previous Dario flicks like Trauma, The Stendhal Syndrome and The Phantom of the Opera. Their history of collaborations have raised eyebrows; since "Phantom," Asia has gone on to become a director in her own right.

"From the beginning I knew Asia was going to be in this," Argento says. "Every day she helped me with a lot ideas. She's a director so she brought some good ideas to the table, she was a great collaboration. She's changed now. For a long time I didn't work with her. I've see her grow up in front of me, from 13 to 16 to 20. I filmed all of these changes, now she's bigger. I'm seen her growth artistically and physically."

He has also watched his Three Mothers trilogy significantly expand. "The film is the biggest of the trilogy. The scope is big. The special [visual] FX from Lee Wilson in Vancouver...he has a good company. We have many special FX in the film, it's very different." Handling the practical side of the blood-soaked effects is vet Sergio Stivaletti whose Argento credits include Phenomena and Opera. Luckily, before our meeting, this writer witnessed some of the film's extreme kills, one involving a monkey acting as a harbinger of evil. "The monkey is good!" Argento exclaims when we tell him this. We agree...the monkey is good.

Two "Masters of Horror" episodes - "Jenifer" and the grisly "Pelts," featuring Meatloaf as a filleted horny hog of a man - primed Argento for the undertaking that was Mother of Tears. One gets the sense, especially by the end of "Pelts" that this conductor of crimson wetwork was reinvigorated by these exercises in small screen horror fare. "It was good because the producers gave me confidence and freedom," Argento enthuses. "I was free to invent anything I wanted. Nobody said, 'Careful, don't be too strong for TV because of the censors.' For the last fifteen years I've heard people tell me to be careful, and something profound touched me on [these episodes]. I didn't have censors. I was so flattered. In America I was so happy and strong and every day I was," he thrusts out his chest and squeezes his fists, head high and growling. "Just one time in 'Jenifer' did they have to cut - the penis and the oral sex. I re-discovered myself. When I started to prepare the Third Mother, I said, 'Now I'm changed, I come back to my roots I want to do something strong, don't say anything to me.' And the producers respected me. After fifteen years I feel very strong, I'm happy."

Argento is openly disparaging of early films Four Flies on Grey Velvet and Cat 'O Nine Tails, so we ask if there was anything he has done within that last fifteen years that disappointed him the most. "Maybe the 'Phantom of the Opera,'" he responds after a pause. "I did that film because it was the first horror film I saw in my life as a child. I was on vacation with my brother and I saw the 'Phantom of the Opera' with Claude Raines. I was impressed - very impressed - and I wanted to give homage to the film. Again, maybe I'd do it again different."

Contrary to some reports, Argento says Mother of Tears is not his final film and that he is not retiring.

Abruptly, the overhead lights cut out on our interview. "What is this?" Argento inquires, wide-eyed. Good question - I expect a black-gloved killer to sneak up and strangle us both with an electrical chord. Alas, nothing that exciting occurs. Just a power surge. The lights come on and the only scary thing I discover is one more anime fan dressed to the hilt as some dude with a massive cardboard sword peering through the doorway. For Argento, it's a full afternoon of interviews while nursing whatever bug he has.

Quelques échos (Dark Dreams,Imdb,Rue Morgue...) sur le dernier Argento présenté hier à Toronto...:

"Saw this tonight amazing film. Scary gory even funny Argento in his prime. Audience sang happy birthday to him."

"was interesting, he clearly has a thing for monkeys. and asia gets nude, Yeah !!!
and its his birthday today, it was a special night, never to be repeated"

"Details, I can't give you folks right now it being 3:45am, but, the monkey is worth the show, the look is very natural as opposed to the more gel-like blues, reds, and greens etc. The acting wasn't bad. The dialogue is more informative than any of them from what I remember. The scare factor is there for jumps anyways. I'll have to be more detailed tomorrow. I am beat. I liked it is all I can say right now... Music is very subtle. I was impressed over all."

"Wow, I loved every minute of this besides the fire alarm. Classic sleezefest and overall great, trashy time at the movies. The gore was awesome and first time I've ever found Argento to be punchy. There's a stinger along the lines of the Exorcist 3 hospital scene.

I've never gone into an Argento flick looking for great dialogue. But felt a lot of the goofy stuff he was totally in on and winking. Think there was a lot more fucking with the audience than a lot of people were aware of.

I'll say it again, man the gore was awesome!"

"i didnt think it was crap. it was exactly like all the other films we all love and cherish on this board (eg story, acting etc). i dont know what you guys are complaing about. i loved it.

next time a guy like dario argento does a world premier with his awesome hot daughter on his birthday and we all sing happy birthday to him...you're not invited."

"My initial thoughts are overall very positive, and I'll keep this spoiler free. As Argento's later work goes, I would say this film is Argento's best since at least The Stendhal Syndrome, and probably since Opera. In The Third Mother, Argento really seems bent on pushing the envelope on gore, and generally accepted good taste...to the joy of legions of gore hounds. The end result is a very fun film; however, this film is a far cry from the other two films in the "Three Mothers Trilogy" and fails to live up to the standard Argento set with his earlier work.

There is a lot to like about The Third Mother. Argento, at a higher level than I have seen from him in the past, really ratchets up the sleeze in this film. There are moments of random nudity and sexuality that feel as if they are yanked straight from the great euro-trash films of the seventies. At times, the film resembles a post-modern riff on Sergio Martino with a dash of Jess Franco. For Argento, this really felt like new territory as, at least in terms of sexuality, I have always felt that he was much more conservative than many of his seventies counterparts. Not so with The Third Mother.

The gore, and brutality behind that gore (especially aimed at women), is glorious. I cannot rave enough about that gore. One scene in particular involving a jaw and some intestines is simply brilliant. I squirmed and a smile covered every inch of my face. One of my favorite kills in any film, ever. For that alone, this film was something special for me, and thankfully, Argento is not finished. He throws gory buckets of blood and guts around throughout the film, much of it of a very taboo nature. No one is off limits in this film. I got the feeling that Argento was ready and willing to do anything, and that was thrilling. It's been awhile since I've felt that in a theater.

The acting in this film, led by Asia Argento, is also fine, especially for an Argento film. I had heard the dialogue in The Third Mother was a bit rough, and the dubbing rougher, but that's simply not true. Both are as good as, if not better than, most Argento films. The story is fairly nonexistent, but again, for a "Three Mothers" film, that's pretty par for the course. No harm, no foul. The dialogue, dubbing, and story (or lack thereof) take absolutely nothing away from this film.

So while my enthusiasm for this film is very high, I do feel the need to point out some things I did not like about the film. Missing from the film was much of the wonder that is so present in Suspiria and Inferno. The Third Mother, like it's predecessors, is a film set in a supernatural world. But I never felt that otherworldliness that is so blanketed over the first two films of this trilogy. No moment where Suzy Banyon is frozen, walking down the hall in Suspiria...no moment where a demon (or Satan himself?) chases a girl from a library. There are of course nods to the supernatural, but it feels forced...disingenuous even.

Also missing is some of the grand camera work that really separates Argento's early work from many of his contemporaries. Nothing like the plaza sequences from Suspiria or Profondo Rosso. No rooftop take like in Tenebre. No slow-mo sequences like in Phenomena. Early in this film, there are some very cool uses of the camera, but overall, like most of Argento's recent work, the cinematography is nothing exceptional. It's unfair that Argento will always be compared to his past work, but the comparison is also impossible, at least for me, to ignore.

But the biggest bummer about The Third Mother is Claudio Simonetti's score. It's downright depressing. It feels so "movie-of-the-week." Like an old Lone Ranger episode even. There were some cool vocal highlights, but even that seemed a bit tired...like standard "devil movie/witch movie we have to have scary chanting" music. Suspiria and Inferno both have scores that tap into your soul, scores that pull you into Argento's world. This score is completely unimpressive, and at times, dopey. And it really bums me out to write that.

Other might complain about the ending, or lack thereof...but it's Dario Argento we're talking about...he's goddamn brilliant, but also doesn't really know how to end a movie. No problem on that...I actually find it charming. And I really hope I don't come across as overly negative. I don't mean to be. The Third Mother, while not a complete return to form for the great director, is certainly a very worthy and welcome addition to Argento's oeuvre. It's his best work in a long, long time...and I am so happy for that.

Here's hoping that Argento continues to push the envelope, continues challenging taboos, and continues to bring his dark dreams to the screen for a long time to come (but with a better score!)."

I had the privelage of seeing the movie at its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last night and I don't know when I last saw a film as graphic and gory as this film...

As alot of people that do go to the fest if you see a movie there you get the true uncut version of the film, as the filmmaker intended you to see it... And since the man himself Mr. Argento as well as his daughter Asia were there to enjoy the movie with the people he intended it for, it was definately a treat...

As I've always stated before in other posts about the hollywood type horror films this makes them seem like amateurish attempts to do something special and end up with something that is PG-13 at best.. If this was getting release in US and Canadian theaters it would get either a NC-17 or a R rating.. this is good hardcore gore at its best and it was refreshing to see something like this, in a world of vanilla kiddie type horror films... Loved it and was grossed out by it.."

"I will second that...was there too, and some of the death scenes are pretty in your face..especially the first death scene, and a later scene involving two lesbians after a love making session, and a reminder of a scene from Phenomena.....and of course the grand finale....one of Dario's best send offs in any of his movies, although the final scene was a bit corny.

And lots of nudity, too, for those interested!!

I must say, that Asia's performance was not the best, but the shocks make up for all of that.

The musical score was impressive, although no hints of Suspiria, although the movie has been mentioned a lot in terms of the Freiburg building (dance academy) and references to Jessica Harper's character.

Lots of in your face blood and GUTS, and a hysterical monkey that screams during the deaths only heightened the experience.

Dario's BEST movie! You will not be disappointed. "

"Saw this at the Toronto Film Festival last night and thought is was pretty damn good. Huge Asia fan and I'm glad she worked with her dad again.
The Mother of Tears has the usual amount of gore AND cheese (you know those moments when part of the audience laughs because they're confused). I recommend this film for Argento fans mostly. It could very well be his last great film but he might have another good Giallo up his sleeve."

It's a pretty schlocky horror movie -- not serious in any way (except for the violence, my God...). I also agree that he did push some cinema taboos.

I was expecting more vivid cinematography (for example, Deep Red), but it wasn't as inventive as I thought it would be. Some pretty decent shots, including a rather long shot following Asia's character during her investigation. Good locations in Rome and Torino.

Acting was so-so, with decent performances from Asia Argento, Adam James, and yes, even Udo Kier. A lot of goofy performances, though -- especially the witches and the ghosts.

Soundtrack was alright, but I was hoping for a classic Goblin rock soundtrack and didn't get it. It's pretty standard horror music. The closing song has vocals and lyrics from Dani Filth (Cradle of Filth), but they're freaking awful.

Is it one of Dario's best films? To me, it doesn't compare to the same level of his earlier work, but it's not that far off. I liked it better than his modern films (Phantom of the Opera, etc.).

"And then there's Dario Argento. Cultural history doesn't really factor into much of his filmography, but he does have an immense personal history to his credit, one that he's spent the last twenty years tarnishing with one subpar horror flick after another. What he apparently needed was a return to the field of his greatest triumphs, the one-two punch of 1977's Suspiria and 1980's Inferno. These two formed the majority of a rumored trilogy collectively called "The Three Mothers Trilogy," and the finale was said to have been in various stages of development for years without ever reaching fruition. After watching a couple giallo projects fall apart, Dario decided it was time to knuckle down and actually deliver the capper to his trilogy. Months of anticipation later, The Mother of Tears slithered its way onto the Midnight Madness schedule, and it's the first Argento since 1988's Opera that I can point to and say, "Yes! This works!" The script is as stupid as ever, but then people don't go to Argento for coherent plots; rather, they go for the man's facility with images and his breathtaking displays of violence. The Mother of Tears is a letdown only in the sense that it isn't really spiritual kin to its predecessors -- the poetic anti-logic that makes Suspiria feel like a fairy tale and Inferno like a nightmare ported straight from its creator's fevered brain is nowhere to be found here. What Argento has brought in the stead of dreaminess is the nastiest, cruelest edge he's ever brought to a film. Borrowing more than a dash of his buddy George Romero's underappreciated The Crazies, he's crafted an unabashedly cheesy, hyperbolically vicious portrait of the end of days. The gore level in this film is off the meter -- every single kill scene seems to be consciously trying to top the famed opening of Suspiria for squirm-inducing nastiness, what with its multiple murdered babies and its heads smashed/hacked into pulp and its spear shoved into a woman's naughty bits -- and if the story doesn't really hang together, it still exudes a palpable sense of disease and chaos. And if the acting isn't so hot, it's still a blast to see Asia Argento and Daria Nicolodi working with Dario again. There's also the single best jump scare since 2003's otherwise-negligible The Forgotten. I'm pretty sure that watching this rots your soul, and I'm all right with that.

Lastly: Seeing The Mother of Tears at Midnight Madness might just be my favorite moviegoing experience ever. It wasn't just that the crowd was perfectly responsive; there's also the fact that the whole auditorium got to sing "Happy Birthday" to Dario. He later gave the single best answer I've ever heard at a Q&A -- in response to what it was like to work with the monkey that serves at the witch familiar, he lauched into a surreal and hilarious exegesis of why monkeys are bite-happy anarchists. It was so awesome. I can only hope that the rest of my TIFF is even half that entertaining."

""I was really suprised how violent it got, even broke some few cinema taboo's, Argento stepping it up. It's a little cheesy in parts, espacially with a scene with a ghost, but most Argento films have a couple things like that. Pretty aweseome, I think Argento fans are really going to dig. Jun Ichikawa part was small, but cool."

"Impressions? I enjoyed it. Lots to like: Asia's performance, the location shoots and the fall of Rome montage stuff, excellent old dark house. Monkey. Grue. Goosebumps. I had a cat that once ate roast beef string, and that was gross, too.

Recurring images of light, sight & vision: cameras, cellphones, paintings, drawings, photos, binoculars, windows, mirrors, lenses, glasses, stained glass, lights, gaze, eyes. For all that, not much up-front eye-candy: maybe budget, maybe deliberate, maybe it's just harder to saturate your film with colours these days.

Probably inappropriate thoughts during viewing: reminded of Three Monkeys (Hear no, See no, Speak no evil), and Roeg's The Witches. In a good way, but still, gotta focus.

The ending's a little rushed, even a little perfunctory, and a little obelisky, but you know, I was happy. Maybe I came away with more affection than adulation, but I liked it.

Q&A afterwards: DA complimented the presentation. "Good projection, last night theatre too big... this sharp." So bite on something, premiere boys.

Asia: "These witches have been my grandmothers, my family, my aunts." Coralina: working with Argento "is quantum physical".

Monkey business: the monkey's female. "If you never work with a monkey, you don't imagine it... You have a monkey on the set, everybody happy." The monkey bit Asia, who made imitation monkey-biting noises describing it: "Gniaa, gniaa, gniaa..." That soundbite isn't going to be on the DVD extras, so I'm really glad I went."
